Deon Kay Shooting: DC Police Release Body Cam Footage In Fatal Shooting, Say He ‘Brandished A Firearm’

WASHINGTON (WJZ) — The Metropolitan Police Dept. has declared body-worn camera footage within the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Deon Kay. Kay, a Black person, has been shot by a DC police official when he fled from police Wed. noon as police have been interrogating records of a person with a gun within the region.

Police officer said Kay “brandished a firearm,” moments before he has been shot within the chest. His own demise prompted rallies amidst rised countrywide & regional scrutiny over police tactics.

The late-night face-off between police & dozens of protesters has been outdoor a city PS (police station).

“During this foot pursuit, one such suspects brandished a firearm. In reaction, an official discharged their own firearm 1 time, striking the suspect,” the MPD announcement stated.

The other person has been also fleeing responding officials at the moment, police officer said. Marcyelle Smith, 19, also of south-east DC, also reportedly had a handgun on him. Smith has been detained & charged for Carrying a Pistol Without a Licence.

Deonte Brown, 18, of South-east, DC has been detained & charged with No Allow.

Kay has been taken to a regional hospital (3) where he has been pronounced passed. The police announcement included photos of the handgun they say Kay were carrying, as well of the gun of the other of his own companions who has been detained.

It comes as police killings of Black citizens have sparked countrywide rallies & calls for sweeping police reform, prompting regional measures by this D.C. Council to bring greater transparency to such incidents.

In Jun, following the killing of George Floyd by police officials in Minneapolis, the council moved urgency legislation requiring the MPD to declare any body camera footage from any fatal shootings (or) use-of-force incidents in 5 days. The dept. should also declare the names of the officials engaged.

In Jul, the city declared body camera footage from 3 separate fatal incidents dating return to 2018.
